I've always regarded those tins of peanut-meat on the health-food shop shelf with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation, wondering how this mystery product would taste, what texture it would have. I recently decided to take the plunge and give it a try. For under €3 a tin, I reasoned that it wouldn't be a major hardship if I didn't like it, and if I did, it would be a new food for the repitoire.
Before embarking on this journey of culinary exploration I did a quick Google search to find recipes, tips, anything that would help me get to grips with this mysterious food. On the suggestion of Velovegan, I decided that I would slice it up, bread it and fry it. On her advice, I coerced it out of the packaging by opening the tin and both ends and loosening the loaf a little bit with the knife-edge before pushing it through 'like a big sausage'.
I'm not going to lie, what came out of the tin didn't look too appetising. Spongy and solid, it appears almost like dog-food. Maybe that's just the effect of it coming out a tin. The label recommends eating it raw or cooked but I tried a little bit of it raw and found it quite bland. To cook it I breaded two slices in the leftover crispy chicken fajita seasoning and fried it until browned.
Cooked, it was perfection. It had a tofu veggie-burger type of texture, yet the roasted peanuts could be tasted as an undertone. I had it with a green salad and some salsa to keep with the the vaguely Mexican theme. I'm looking forward to seeing what else can be done with Nuttolene!
The Vegan Kook was kind enough to bestow upon me the Liebster award, an award which seems to be floating around the blogsphere this MoFo, meant to highlight and send love to all of us small-scale vegan bloggers!
“Liebster” is German and means ‘dearest’ or ‘beloved’ but it can also mean ‘favourite’.
The idea behind this award is to bring attention to bloggers who have less than 200 followers and show your support during Vegan Mofo!
The rules of winning this award are as follows:
1. Show your thanks to those who gave you the award by linking back to them.
2. Reveal 5 of your top picks and let them know by leaving a comment on their blog.
3. Post the award on your blog.
It's difficult to choose as I'm a bit out of the blogging loop at the moment but a few blogs I like are...
1. The Velo Vegan
2. My Adventures in Veg...
3. All about.. (vegan) food
4. Vegan Student: A Piece of Cake
5. Cooking Vegan Food Up North

Hmm, I'm always wary of it too but that looks good! Might have to give it a go.
ReplyDeleteHeya emmathackerfatcore, thanks for the comment! You should give it a go, think of it as a culinary adventure, a trek into the unknown! XD
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the Liebster award and your nice words about my blog too :) And yes, Barcelona is great and it's getting more and more vegan friendly!
ReplyDeleteOMG! That looks really gross right out of the can - but it looks pretty tasty after cooking!
