Away in Belgium, vegan delights in Brussels and Ghent

Yes, my absence was due to my trip to Belgium!
I spent a glorious ten days exploring Brussells, rummaging through second-hand books, eating good vegan food and relaxing watching Peep Show!
Yes, I said good vegan food! Belgium is fantastic for vegan food!
There are huge epiceries bio (organic supermarkets) that sell loads of things you can't get in Ireland.

Like rice yogurt!
It was pretty good, it was vanilla flavoured and had a flan-like texture. And almond yogurt!
It wasn't bad, not amazing either. Just tasted like slightly sweetened almond mush.

And coconut milk yogurt!
I knew I wouldn't like this, to be honest. I hate coconuts and was hoping that the chocolate would mask the coconut flavour while giving a thickness to the yogurt.
I was wrong.
And Hempburgers!
These were fantastic, I brought some home with me! They're like little falafels, except made out of hemp. They're not just for vegan, hemp-loving weirdos, although the little face on the packet looks pretty stoned. Not doing much for the image of hemp!

This is the vegetarian restaurant we went to when we went to Ghent for the day. Its weird, I'd looked up Happy Cow, had a place in mind I wanted to go and we just stumbled across this place by accident! And the food was beautiful. I had a spinach burger, it doesn't sound good but it really, really was, it came with a garlic mayo dressing and it was inspiring! I want to recreate it! They also do the best vegan brownies I have ever tasted *, really fudgey and divine!

They also had Alpro soya ranges that we can't get here like delectable tofu nuggets and spicy burgers and mad flavoured soya milks. I tried forest fruit flavour, which was good except the milk itself was so thick it reminded me of those awful yogurt drinks, like Yops, which I never really liked.

Although there are vegan and vegetarian places in Brussells the ones I purposely looked for were closed for Christmas, so eating out was a mixture of epicerie bio goodies, stuff from quite well stocked supermarkets and those turkish place that do falafel.

There was even a really cute place called 'Mr Falafel' that was all vegetarian!
I just have to say, I love Belgium!
The lady in 'Shanti', the epicerie bio I frequented even gave me free chocolate!
I could get used to that!

* Don't let the fact that I had never had brownies before diminish my recommendation, these things were amazing!
