I got a shock in Dublin city today to see Supreme Master ads for veganism on the side of buses! I've also seen the ads on tv, they're specifically aimed at an Irish audience and are fronted by former Ms World Rosanna Davidson.
Do I like Supreme Master?
Not particularly, they're a bit spiritual for me, they have a channel on Sky that does alot of chanting and such. But if they're willing to spend the money promoting veganism without using brash offensive media (I'm looking at you PETA) I won't object. I can't remember the exact phrasing, I'll take a photograph if I see it again but it said something along the lines of 'thriving on a vegan diet'. I did notice the use of the word 'diet', which will most likely just lead people to think its just another fad like detox or macrobiotic or something equally unattainable. At least its getting the word 'vegan' out there I suppose, I just wish they'd get the facts out there too.
On a related note, there was an article in last night's Evening Herald about a journalist who went on a vegan, wheat, alcohol and sugar free 'detox' diet to see if he's feel any better. He decided that it wasn't for him and that's fair enough but I hate the way deprivation and veganism are always linked.
The nutritional side note had a very insulting comment about how teenage girls often give up dairy to be like celebrities, which is dangerous because they need to get their calcium.
There are so many things wrong with that I don't know where to start!
You don't need dairy to get your calcium, do some research! That's what I did when I gave up dairy as a teenage girl, not because I wanted to emulate some celebrity but because I genuinely objected to the dairy industry. They just assume that anything a teenage girl does is because of fad, not due to reasoning, personal opinion or intellectual thought.
