I never cared for natural yogurt in my dairy-laden days but after reading Terry Hope Romero's
blog post about it's various applications, I decided to take the plunge and buy some plain soya yogurt to try. I was surprised to find that I liked it! I'm not sure which is the best brand but so far I've tried
Provamel and
Sojasun. I prefer the taste of the former, but the latter is cheaper, has added calcium and still tastes pretty good.
So far I have used it...
- to make a simple guacamole (mix together an avocado, some yogurt, a pinch of salt, a pinch of garlic powder and tiny bit of lemon juice/apple cider vinegar)
- as an egg replacer for an unsightly yet tasty chocolate microwave cake, just used a tablespoon
- to make a chocolate sauce for dipping fruit into (mix together melted chocolate, some yogurt and a splash of vanilla soya milk)
- just as a snack, with some apple purée and a little bit of liquid fruit sweetener/brown sugar stirred in
It has a pleasent tang to it, a tang that perhaps a few years ago I would have found horrendously sour but I now feel adds a depth of flavour. Hugely versatile, I'm excited to see what other dishes it can be used in! I'm thinking more dips and sauces (such as tzatziki), and possibly curries.
If there are any recipes that you feel I
must try, please let me know!
I was never a fan of plain yogurt, either, but now we have it all the time. I was just mentioning on my own blog that I alternate stewed apples and dried fruit. I keep them in the fridge and anyone can put together a quick snack or pudding by mixing whatever's there with some Yofu (Provamel). Because I stew the apples with agave (and cinnamon) you don't need any added sugar.
ReplyDeleteYour ideas sound good, too! I especially fancy the chocolate sauce one! :o)

Stewed apple with agave and cinnamon sounds pretty amazing, here I buy a big jar of apple purée rather than making it myself because my kitchen space is pretty limited (and I'm lazy!). That chocolte sauce also freezes pretty well, I dipped some bananas in it and froze them to make little ice-pops and they turned out really well. Will have to have a look at your blog for more ideas, thanks for your comment Penny ^_^
