Sova Vegan Butcher, Dublin 2

Soya schnitzel

Baked pear tarte tatin

I'm sorry for the woeful pictures, but low lighting in fancy restaurants does not lend well to photography. But good photography is something I am willing to sacrifice for good food! Sova Vegan Butcher is Dublin's fancy vegan restaurant, and has been getting rave reviews. I've been there twice now with non-vegans (veggies and omnis), and have had to explain what seitan is more than once, but they generally enjoyed trying something different.

I have enjoyed everything I've had, firstly the turkey roulade and then the soya schnitzels. The turkey roulade is a Christmas dinner style affair, with soft, slightly herby seitan with cranberries, with a potato tower and roasted Brussels sprouts. The soya schnitzels were breaded nuggets with crispy veg noodles, pesto, mashed potato baked into a swirl and a very astringent mushroom sauce. The schnitzels were lovely, I liked everything but the mushroom sauce.

One thing Sova is lacking is a dessert selection. There is a lime cashew cheesecake, which I had on my first visit, and reminded me of a yoghurt parfait I would make for breakfast. The other option is the dessert of the day, which both times I went was a baked pear tarte tatin. I've always though that baked fruit was a bit healthy for a dessert, a bit of an old school vegan cliché, but it was beautiful! It was half a baked pear covered in pastry with vanilla and chocolate sauce, with lots of sweetness and cinnamon. Much nicer than the cheesecake!

Its a little bit expensive, mains are €15.90, but I think its worth it for something a bit fancy and different, and so well presented. Plus it is BYOB, so drinkers would save there. Overall I would give it 4/5, I think the food is gorgeous and creative but that a decadent dessert wouldn't go astray!

  1. Looks and sounds amazing. I love eating in fancy vegan restaurants, but you're right about that lighting. You'd think, in the age of Instagram, that they'd work on lighting things a little better! :-)
