A vegan trip to Berlin

Mural on the Berlin wall at the East Side Gallery

I'm just back from my trip to the vegan paradise of Berlin. So many vegan restaurants, so little time! Berlin is great, lots to do and see and the u-bahn made it so easy to get around. Before going I read Hasta La Vegan's extensive posts on his trips to Berlin for reviews, as well as consulting HappyCow. We went to Zeus (twice), OhLaLa, Chaostheorie (twice), Vöner, Vego Foodworld and of course, Veganz. I ate lots of fun food and drank lots of (chai and matcha) lattes and Fritz-Kolas!

Zeus: Vegan-friendly pizza place with an entire separate vegan menu. I have little to no German so I was afraid I had been given the wrong menu I had so much choice! I got a cheese and salami pizza, which was so good that we bought another one to bring back to the apartment to have for breakfast!

OhLaLa: An entirely vegan French-style bakery. We got there an hour before closing and there weren't any savoury options available so we just had to get cake! I got one of their famous hazelnut and chocolate Tresor cakes, as described by Hasta La Vegan. I forgot that I had read about it and was pleasently surprised by the syrupy centre!

Chaostheorie: A vegan bar that does sandwiches and croissants. I was expecting this to be a restaurant that serves drinks rather than a bar that serves food, but I liked it. As a non-drinker I was well catered for, I got a matcha latte and a Fritz orange lemonade. The food is divided into savoury and sweet options, available in sandwiches or croissants and there was also a special off-menu option of a burger. I got a bolognaise sandwich, which I was very amused to find was actually a lasagne toasted sandwich! It even had a sheet of pasta inside, it was fantastic! And it came with nachos! For dessert I got a "Thumbs Up!" bar, which is one of the "Go Max Go" range of chocolate bars. It tasted like a Crunchie with peanut butter, which was odd but nice.

Vöner: A vegan döner kebab restaurant. My partner had the kebab wrap but I was more in the mood for the garden burger. My burger was really good, it was a dark, mushroomy kind of burger with pickles, ketchup and mayonaise. It reminded me of a maxi Gopal burger, which is an endorsement! We got a plate of delicious chips between us, which were rustic and covered in paprika.

Vego Foodworld:  All vegan burgers, pizzas and a few particularly German specialities such as currywurst.  I'm not used to having to pick between burgers and pizza! And having so many types to choose from! I eventually decided on a chicken schnitzel burger with chips. The burger was perfect, with ketchup, mayo and pickles. The chips were oddly small but very crispy, reminded us of the little bits of chips that end up at the end of a bag of chipper chips!

Veganz: Vegan supermarket extrordinaire! After Hasta La Vegan's honest review I adequately adjusted my expectations, but I was pleasently surprised. Maybe it's because I'm from an expensive country but I didn't think Veganz was overly expensive. Not cheap but not really any more expensive than I'm used to for speciality products. It was overwhelming and fun to see all of the different brands, but I ended up not buying that much. I got some wheat gluten flour, biscuits and Chai latte powder, and a Veganz bag as a souvenir. I would have loved to get some Veganaise but I didn't think it was worth paying to check in a bag for. We finished up in the little coffee shop at the front where I had a blueberry muffin and a cinnamon maple latte. On the last day of my trip I went back to get a bagel and a couple of blueberry muffins to have for the plane.

Bonus mention- CurryWurst museum: A currywurst museum with a small restaurant/take-away. Not an all vegan establishment, but there was a tofu option and it was only €2.50! You can't go wrong with vegan bratwurst, ketchup and curry powder!

Zeus pizza for breakfast!
Bag from Veganz
Manner Neapolitan biscuits, accidentally vegan yummy hazelnut chocolate wafers. I got a big bag to bring home, but smaller packets are available in most shops and even U-bahn vending machines.

  1. Love the bags of Manner wafers - so rare to find them in the UK. Need to go back to Berlin again...
