Natto for breakfast

I was first introduced to natto in Japan, wanting to try it simply because it was a exotic, vegan delicacy. Thinking it was largely unavailable outside of Japan, I was suitably shocked yesterday to find this strange food residing humbly in the top of the freezer in the Drury Street Asian market in Dublin city centre.

It comes in a little foam container with two little sauce sachets, one of soya sauce and one of mustard. The English language ingredients stated that the sauces didn't contain fish, so I gave them a go.

Unfortunately only the ingredients are translated, but I know from having it in Japan that it's heated in the microwave, although I'm sure you could eat it cold either. I put it in the microwave for 2 minutes but 1.5 minutes would probably be better, as mine looked a tiny bit burnt on the top.

The soya sauce was delicious but I'm not a fan of mustard, next time I'll leave that sachet closed! While in Japan, I experienced the joy of natto maki (natto sushi rolls), so they're getting made next!
