Article: Poultry cull and EU laws

This story has been all over the Irish newspapers today, that the EU will force 10 small poultry farmers who haven't complied with new welfare regulations to kill their animals. There is so much wrong with this that I don't even know where to begin! To me it is a clear example of the inherent hypocrisy of welfarism.

Farmers hoped they would have been allowed to “finish off the crop” of hens by allowing them to reach their economic potential before being culled  committee chairman Alo Mohan said.

The Irish Farmers Association say it themselves that the animals they keep are economic commodities, in their own words mere 'crops'. Giving the poor chickens a slightly larger cage won't change that.

Happy ending update, 2 January: The Alliance for Animal Rights has found homes for the condemed birds!
