For some reason Irish people aren't really into their waffles, (I'm more used to potato waffles than sweet Belgian waffles) nobody has waffle makers and I never tried a sweet waffle until I went to Belgium for the first time at 14. My recent visit to Belgium re-stirred my curiosity in gaufres, seeing as there are non-vegan versions on every street-corner!
Which brings me to this baby, I snagged a waffle maker for €12 in Lidl last week and have been experimenting wildly! I'm really getting a taste for waffles, I prefer them to pancakes, they're thicker with that soft inside and crispy latticed exterior!
Since I've mastered the basic waffle I decided this evening to foray into wholemeal with added fruit. My basic mixture really simple, just two parts milk, two parts flour, one part stewed apple, which I based on this recipe. After that are your optional add-ins, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, fruit, anything you feel like chucking in there. Today I used half brown, half white flour and added some cinnamon, vanilla, Sweet Freedom fruit sweetener along with some blueberries and strawberries. If you don't have self-raising flour obviously throw some baking powder and/or soda in there too.

I begged for a waffle iron for Christmas and I really can't get the hang of it!! How do you stop it from sticking to the sides? All I get is two thin sticky waffle silhouettes! :(
ReplyDeleteYay, comments! XD
ReplyDeleteRegarding waffles sticking, I'd say make sure the plates are really well oiled, that the mixture isn't too liquidy and also to make sure that the waffle is cooked and browned before trying to remove it.
