Vegan Quorn Pieces and Hot & Spicy Burgers

I saw a few months ago on the vegan internet grapevine that Quorn had launched some vegan products. Quorn is a huge supermarket brand, and if they could get more accessible vegan products into supermarkets it would be great. I found the vegan Quorn pieces and spicy burgers in Down To Earth in Dublin city centre, so they haven't quite reached supermarkets yet. Also they were €6.20 each, which isn't exactly cheap. But as they are new and represent a potential vegan direction for the company, I thought I would give them a go.

I had one of the spicy burgers on a slim bagel with some ketchup and a slice of Violife original cheese, as pictured above. I didn't get a picture, but I also tried the pieces in a stir-fry which I had with ramen noodles.

I really enjoyed both products. When I was vegetarian years ago I wasn't mad on Quorn because it reminded me of meat, but as I now haven't eaten meat in over a decade the memory isn't as visceral and I enjoy vegan meat products. The texture of the vegan Quorn products is interesting, it is denser than tofu, softer than tempeh but not chewy like seitan. They are vaugely chicken-style, even though that isn't stated on the packaging. I thought that the bag of pieces was really small for the price, but when I opened the bag, the pieces themselves were smaller than I expected. I don't think I would get more than 3, maybe 4 at a stretch, servings out of it though.

One thing to note is that I didn't follow the cooking guidelines on the packaging. I put the burgers under the grill for 20-25 minutes and just threw the pieces in with a stir-fry rather and both turned out perfectly.
