Come Dine With Me

Like many vegans, I am obsessed with food. I love to cook and try new things. I am a foodie in the least snobbish and elitist way possible! I think this is probably why I like Channel 4's 'Come Dine With Me'. I watch it from time to time with the usual thoughts of 'How could I veganise this?'.

Recently, flicking through the channels, I came across a repeat with a vegan contestant. I was tempted to immediately turn it off, simply because I get so angry when vegans are misrepresented. However, I decided to stick with it out of curiosity to see how she was catered for by the other contestants and how she would cook for the others.

I wasn't optimistic when one contestant declared that he thought that 'extreme vegetarianism is an illness', but upon meeting fun, out-going, perfectly healthy Nikki he quickly retracted his statement.

I was pleasantly surprised that she was generally quite well-catered for, with the cooks using ingredients such as vegan mayonnaise and cheese, and remembering to get vegan wine.

She got the usual stick and scepticism that vegans get over the course of the episodes (each week gets 4/5 episodes, one for each guest) but she represented herself, and veganism, really well. And her all-vegan menu looked really tasty!

I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen it.. go and watch it!

Also, I know that while I was away they started making an Irish 'Come Dine With Me', but I haven't gotten around to watching it yet!

Edit: I've seen some of the Irish version... no vegans yet though!
