My Quest To Broaden My Knowledge of Animal-Testing Alternatives Begins

I will admit that my knowledge of animal testing and it's alternatives is not great compared to my knowledge of food. I tend to shy away from arguments about it simply because I'm not 100% sure of all the facts. However, I'm eager to learn, as I say, I'm growing as a vegan all the time, learning new things and striving to do the best I can. I've been flicking through this website, the Dr Hadwen Trust, which is a medical research charity, specifically providing grants to those who do not test on animals. The fact that groups like this exist gives me hope for a more animal-friendly future!

  1. Yes, if only they could all be like the Dr Hadmwen Trust. I have a postcard on my wall that says: If non-human animals are so different from us then to use them for testing our drugs is stupid. If they are so like us it is wicked.

Chimps are regularly used in tests, yet it's been said that they should really be classified with humans, rather than apes. Which is why they're used so much...

And companies like Iams actually carry out horrific animal research on their PET food! :o( Don't get me started!

  2. Hi Penny, nice to hear from you!
I know, it's just ridiculous when you actually start to think about it, animals are classified as being enough alike to us to test drugs on but different enough that their feelings/rights don't matter.
I have actually heard that about chimps, is this the case you're thinking of? http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/apr/01/austria.animalwelfare

  3. No, it wasn't that case, but it was very interesting to read about it. I wish I knew what had happened to the poor fellow in the end...
