I've gotten out of the swing of blogging recently, I haven't been taking pictures or really putting much thought into my food. I did however try Redwoods fish-style steak (I couldn't find it on the Redwoods website so either it's a new product, old product or just generally ignored product!) and some accidentally vegan Horchata ice-pops!
It's been at least 10 years since I've had any kind of breaded fish, so I don't have any particular attachments to or strong memories of it. Therefore I tried this out of curiosity, as part of my on-going vegan culinary adventure! I must say, predictably, that they're nice, slightly fishy but not overpoweringly so. I am a sucker for anything covered in breadcrumbs! Plus the TVP adds a interesting, slightly crumbly texture to the tofu. I had have a steak in a salad where it fared nicely.
I've found that the longer I'm vegan, the further away I get from my meat eating days, the more I can classify omni-subs as what they actually are, specific mixtures of carbs/protein/fats/flavourings, and therefore not associate them too strongly with animal products. Why do omnis get to decide what 'real' food is anyway? Sorry, the obsession I see all around me with the vague notion of authenticity irks me something fierce.
Anyway, onto Horchata!
Horchata is a traditional Spanish drink made of chufa, which I've seen translated as 'tiger nut milk'. It comes in a carton, like regular plant milk, but whenever I read the ingredients they always have cows' milk in them too. So that's why I was pleasantly surprised to come across these in the Mercadona, which is just a regular local supermarket. They seem to be vegan by virtue of the ingredients so I thought I'd give them a try. They taste like ice-cream, they reminded me of the Mini-Milk ice-pops I had as a child (I'm sure Mini-Milks are still around but now that I'm vegan I just don't acknowledge their existence!), bland, sweet, creamy and nice for hot days. Result!
